A common type of eczema or atopic dermatitis is said to be scalp pruritus. In simple terms, it refers to an itchy scalp. The most common cause for this condition is said to be dandruff and an inflammatory skin condition called seborrheic dermatitis. Inflammation could be caused by stress, seasonal changes, fluctuating hormone levels, and excessive yeast growth on the skin. A very dry or oily hair and other skin conditions could also lead to dandruff.

Several home remedies can effectively treat an itchy scalp, without the need for special medical treatment. Some home remedies for atopic dermatitis include:

1. Apple cider vinegar
The antibacterial, antifungal and anti-inflammatory properties of apple cider vinegar helps to reduce itching due to dry skin. By using diluted apple cider vinegar in warm water to rinse after shampooing, dandruff and itchy scalp can be alleviated. This home remedy is effective to treat atopic dermatitis.

2. Organic coconut oil
This oil is extracted from mature coconuts. It is loaded with lauric acid, a saturated fat that has antimicrobial properties. As lauric acid helps to efficiently absorb the oil, it is a soothing treatment for an itchy scalp due to eczema.

3. Peppermint oil
Studies show that this oil is effective at reducing dandruff. It also helps in soothing the scalp and calming down the itch. It can be diluted, and massaged on the scalp, with olive oil before shampooing for good results. Peppermint tea is also effective when used after shampooing.

4. Tea tree oil
This is an essential oil with antiseptic, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and antifungal properties. This oil is only for external use and should never be ingested. It should be mixed with a gentle shampoo or with oil and massaged into the scalp. You should very little quantity of this home remedy for atopic dermatitis as it could irritate the skin.

5. Lavender essential oil
This oil has antimicrobial and antibacterial properties that improve scalp health and generate the growth of cells which helps to reduce stress. This oil should be mixed with any carrier oil like olive or coconut oil and applied directly to the scalp. It should be washed out by normal shampooing after 10 minutes of soaking. It can be repeated several times a week.

6. Rosemary oil
This oil helps to improve cell growth and reduces scalp itching when applied to the scalp with olive or coconut oil and washed with shampoo. It results in a healthy scalp.

7. Cedarwood oil
This oil is used to treat different conditions, particularly atopic dermatitis. It has antifungal and antibacterial properties that help to treat atopic dermatitis of the scalp effectively. A mixture of lavender, rosemary and cedarwood extract also helps treat hair loss due to eczema of the scalp.

8. Aloe vera
The extract of the aloe vera plant has anti-inflammatory properties that are effective in treating scalp dermatitis. It suppresses flare-ups and lessens the severity of flare-ups.

9. Meditation
Activities like meditation according to research, help in reducing stress and is effective in eliminating itchy scalps due to anxiety that is aggravated by eczema. The age-old practice of meditation provides a coping mechanism and a sense of control. Meditation can be tried alone or along with other home remedies for a quicker result.
