It is estimated that more than 7% of children and 4% to 6% of American adults suffer from a neurodevelopmental disorder known as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (or ADHD). People with this condition find it difficult to organize and complete set tasks. Many also struggle with anger outbursts and impulse control. Some of the ways to improve the daily functions of those with ADHD include medication and behavioral therapy, with the support of lifestyle changes (i.e., diet) and natural remedies:

1. Natural herbals for ADHD
Clinical trials show that several herbal treatments benefit people with ADHD. Some herbal medicines that serve as natural remedies for ADHD, including:

  • French maritime pine bark extract: This is a plant-based material that helps increase visual-motor coordination and reduces hyperactivity and inattentiveness.
  • Ginseng: This Chinese herbal medicine is said to alleviate hyperactivity and inattentiveness.
  • Ning Dong: This medicine is also a Chinese herb that helps to reduce some symptoms of ADHD
  • Bacopa: This is a traditional Indian medicine that is derived from water hyssop. Studies show that it helps to reduce restlessness and improves self-control.

It is ideal to check with the doctor before using supplements or natural medicines and other remedies on those with ADHD, especially if it is for a child. As research is still on to find out if the medicines are effective and safe, there is a need to know the dosage that is to be given to the patient and if there would be any side effects.

2. Essential oils
Studies show that essential oils have a beneficial effect on people with ADHD. Some people believe that such oils help to relieve or reduce symptoms of ADHD. Examples of essential oils that serve as natural remedies for ADHD, which include:

  • Lavender: The result of a study published by the University of Minnesota suggested that lavender helps in sleep therapy. Many people have also agreed that lavender does help people to sleep. This benefits people suffering who often are sleepless due to ADHD.
  • Rosemary: It has been shown in studies that people who were exposed to the aroma of rosemary had better scores for speed and accuracy in thinking activities.
  • Vetiver: Research has shown that inhaling the essential oil of vetiver helped people with ADHD to be able to focus better. Research is still ongoing to see the extent of its benefit.

3. Additional oils
Other essential oils that have been recommended as natural remedies for people with different symptoms of ADHD are frankincense, ylang-ylang, bergamot, eucalyptus, lemon, and cedarwood. Some studies show that hospice patients who were hand massaged using oils that contain bergamot, frankincense, and lavender showed great relief from the symptoms of depression. Bergamot has anti-depressant qualities, a combination of clary sage and ylang-ylang is said to lift the mood, cedarwood oil has sedative effects, and lemon and frankincense are said to improve focus.

To be on the safe side, it is best to speak to the doctor before using any essential oil on children and to discuss its level of safety. Ensure that the essential oil should is always diluted with a carrier oil. Never apply essential oils on the skin directly as it could cause an allergic reaction. As essential oils can be toxic to the body, they should never be swallowed.
