Pet owners constantly worry about flea infestation. Fleas are parasites that feed off the blood of your pets. Flea bites are not particularly painful like the sting of a wasp but painful enough, which can irritate your pet. Itchiness and swelling will occur around the area that has been bitten. Most pet owners are also aware of the fact that fleas can be vectors for a number of other diseases.

Fortunately for all the pet owners, there are a number of homemade flea remedies that you can try to prevent and get rid of fleas.

1. Dish soap
Just some dish soap diluted with water works well as a flea trap and is easy to make. All you have to do is fill a plate or bowl with a mixture of warm water and dish soap and place it in the rooms that have the most flea activity. This solution acts as a glue and due to the high viscosity of this solution and traps the fleas. This method should be repeated with a fresh batch of the dish soap solution every day. This method, however, works best at night, as fleas are nocturnal. You can also place a candle near the bowl that contains the dish soap solution, in order to attract the fleas.

2. Baking soda
Vacuuming is one of the most effective flea control home remedies. You can sprinkle some baking soda on your furniture and carpets. Then, take a brush and rub it into the fabric and vacuum your home thoroughly. This will help you get rid of fleas.

3. Salt
Just like baking soda, salt, too, is a great natural flea home remedy when accompanied by vacuuming. Salt helps to get rid of adult fleas by acting as a dehydrating agent. In order to treat fleas with this natural home remedy, take some finely ground salt and sprinkle it all over your carpets. Let the salt rest for about 1-2 days before vacuuming your house thoroughly. This remedy works wonders to help get rid of fleas.

4. Diatomaceous earth
This is the microscopic remains of fossilized algae and diatoms. It acts as an excellent natural flea prevention remedy. Sprinkle some diatomaceous earth on to your carpet and let it rest for 1-2 days and vacuum your house thoroughly. Make sure you use the food grade option though. Although this powder is non-toxic, it can irritate your eyes and throat; hence you are advised to wear gloves and a face mask when you treat your home with this.
